The Kennels at Lupton House

Our first question of the new era comes from Ian who asks “Hello, can you help with information about the building shown here? It is opposite the gatehouse of Lupton House near Hillhead but is now largely overgrown. I can’t find anything about this online?”

Mr Peter Pudduck of Kingswear Historians says these are the kennels to Lupton House. This is supported by the fact that the road at this point is called Kennels Lane and the building is at the edge of Kennels Wood. The site is now very overgrown, but this is what it looked like in 2008.

This is the original kennels to Lupton House and is a Grade II listed building.

A further photograph and details of the property are at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6058175.

The building was designed by the Brixham architect George Wightwick in the gothic revival style in 1833 and was constructed in 1835. The next photograph shows the original design and is taken from the scetchbooks created by George Wightwick.

Details of the building’s listing are as follows:

Entry Name: Kennels to Lupton House

Listing Date: 21 May 1985 Grade: II

In 2013 an application was made and approved to turn the kennels into accommodation but in view of certain restrictions the build was never converted
