Monday 13th January 2025 at 7.30pm in Kingswear Village Main Hall
Happy New Year
I will be delivering the first presentation of our New Year.
Please join me as I guide you on a journey through time which will illustrate how, and why, Kingswear has evolved over the census years. I will be addressing the parish of Kingswear as it exists today rather than the tiny village that it was until 1974. At each census year I will set the background of world and national developments which influenced the village before we meet villagers who will give the highlights of developments in the village over the the past 10 years. We will follow one family that lived and grew throughout the period. The census takers will explain who is at home in 3 of the grander houses. We will visit ships in harbour for 2 of the census years to show the scale and breadth of maritime trade. I will then use the census information to show how the village has evolved over the past 10 years in terms of population, employment and housing.
By 1921 you will see that Kingswear, as it is today, had taken shape and a numer of trends were established which have continued to the present day. I will answer questions after the presentation to the limit of my knowledge of the facts.
Trigger Warning: This presentation will include details of life, war and death and reference to slavery and colonialisation.. Some elements may not be entirely politically correct by modern standards, but reflect the environment of the time. I may have taken minor liberties with the facts for reasons of illustration.
