We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. It’s now the start of the second half of our programme of talks for 25/26.
Kent’s Cavern – Monday 12th January in Kingswear Hall at 7:30pm
Our January speaker, Quinn Arden-Trew is employed at Kent’s Cavern and is currently responsible for cataloguing all the specimens, the conservation programme, and recently for planning and conducting the first excavation within Kent’s Cavern for over 10 years. He is also currently researching a PhD and has presented guest lectures at several educational establishments as well as at the Munich Show – the largest fossil and mineral exhibition in Europe.
Kent’s Cavern is one of the most significant finds, not only in Devon or the UK but has far wider significance as one of the most important archaeological and paleontological sites in the world.
Quinn’s talk will look at the history, and the discovery of the remains of the ancient people who lived there, the excavations and the people who contributed to the development of archaeology. This will be a fascinating story of the evolution of the very earliest human beings and the scientists who brought their story to light.
Venue: KW Village Hall
Tea and biscuits will be available after the talk (included in your £5 entrance fee)

Love and Loss in Wartime Dartmouth – Flavel Theatre – 5:30pm Friday 15 Jan 2026
The event is presented by Pete Healey, Jo Harper’s son, who found her diaries in the
1990s, and Viv Watts, who knew Jo well.
Peter tells the wartime story of Jo Harper who was a WRNS member
of the Boat Crews in Dartmouth from 1941-44. It’s a tale of a brief and
passionate love affair between Jo and a young Sub-Lieutenant in command of
Motor Launch ML 177: the concerts in Torquay, walks to Berry Head, tea in
Cockington, and dinner on board the Motor Launch, in the weeks leading up to
the St Nazaire raid in March 1942.
