Our next talk to be held in Kingswear Village Hall at 7:30pm on Monday 9th February, is on the Madre de Dios, the largest and richest ship ever to have been brought into Dartmouth.
Speaker
Our Speaker, Clare Pawley, has researched and written about the Madre de Dios for the SW Maritime History Society
Synopsis
Captured by Sir Walter Raleigh and a consortium of English Privateers in a battle fought off the Azores, she carried a cargo of spices and fabulous treasures.
Clare will bring the story to life by telling us the effect the event had on shaping our colonial history for the next 200 years.
The arrival of the Madre de Dios in Dartmouth, and the behaviour of her captors, caused a scandal that rumbled on for years and resulted in Dartmouth being over-run by sailors and merchants all trying to seize vessels of similar value. For more detail click HERE.
Admission costs £5 which will be collected at the door. The presentation will be followed by complimentary tea / coffee and biscuits.
