By Bill Lindsay.
Bill has researched these journeys at the National Maritime Museum. He will describe them for us on Monday evening.
Bill Lindsay has a strong family connection to the river Dart. he is the great, great, great, Grandson of William Schaw Lindsay whose rags to riches story ended with him owning one of the largest shipping companies in the world. Several of his ships left from the port for the New World. He involved himself in the politics of Dartmouth and stood as a Parliamentary candidate for Dartmouth. Although he was unsuccessful, he had made Dartmouth one of the key ports for emigration to the new world and travellers would arrive in Kingswear and Dartmouth to start their epic journeys across the oceans. Bill will tell us about the ships that left this port and the people involved.
Bill has written numerous articles and book chapters including a book on his forefather called William Schaw Lindsay – Victorian Entrepreneur. There will be copies of his book for sale.
Entrance to the event will be £5 payable on the door. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available after the presentation.
