In addition to the census records, an analysis of trends in population, demography, housing and employment was carried out to derive information on Kingswear’s history and this was presented in narrative format on 13th January 2025. The presentation notes are accessible HERE and the associated data analysis is accessible through these links:

This is a brief introduction to the census information:

Conducted every 10 years since 1841 except:

  • 1931 Census destroyed by fire in 1942
  • 1939 National Register in preparation for WW2 instead of 1941.

1841 to 1911 openly available through Family History websites.

1921 on pay-to-view record by record.

The “Hundred Year Rule” means only summary detail is available after 1921.

Information gathered varies from one to another but increasing.

Limited data has been transcribed to electronic form:  people’s occupation and house information is often not transcribed.

Scanned images are available through subscriptions such as Ancestry: Quality of transcriptions may vary.

The loss of the 1931 census records in a fire and the fact that there was no 1941 census, means the next release of census information will be the 1951 census which will be released in 2052.
