Kingswear School 1932
There were about 80 children in the school 4—11 years old.
Two years before when Mr Wedlake had been the headmaster it had taken children up to 14.
Miss Hayward was the Head and took the top two classes,
Miss Davis the 7 – 9 year olds and Miss Lorey the infants.
There was milk at playtime and no school meals but we sang, grace in the mornings when we arrived, and before and after going home for dinner and before going home at night!
Miss Hayward taught us good poetry I still remember most of it She also required good tidy writing, I was never any good at spelling
She could keep order in the school and could use the cane when required, if we were given it we didn’t tell our parents!
In those days there were two play grounds, one for infants and girls and one for the older boys
There was a flagpole and on Empire Day we used to salute the flag.
