Pre-historic Kingswear

Kingswear in pre-historic times.

Much that follows is taken from a talk delivered to Kingswear Historians by the County Archaeologist.

Palaeolithic . (Early Stone Age) From the earliest signs of hominids to approximately 11,650 ago. The earliest signs of human habitation in this area are worked flints found between Kingswear and Brixham in the vicinity of Brownstone and could be as early as 160,000 years old. .

Neolithic (New Stone Age). from 5000 years ago to 2,600 year ago. An arrow head was found near Froward Point.

Bronze Age: 2,600 – 700 years BCE. There is a barrow dating to this period at Brownstone. There have been several bronze age artifacts found in the region of Churston Ferrers.

Iron Age: 800 years BCE to 43 BCE

  1. A promontory fort was constructed at Kingswear.
  2. A defensive hill fort with a single bank was constructed on Berry Head,
  3. There is evidence of iron age settlement at Greenway and another at Stoke Fleming.
  4. There is evidence of a hill fort with several defensive banks at Hill Head.
  5. There is further evidence of iron age defensive structures at Capton, Stoke Fleming, Slapton and Torcross.
