The Engines That Changed The World

David Hulse Donation and Illustrated Talk

In 2022 Dartmouth Museum was approached by David Hulse, the internationally renowned model maker, about the possibility of housing his collection of 18th century atmospheric steam engines, based upon the original design of Thomas Newcomen.  For 50 years David had researched, designed and built 8 perfect, working models, making a unique and spectacular collection that the Museum was honoured to accept.  In October 2023 Dartmouth Museum opened a new exhibition about Thomas Newcomen and his Legacy in Dartmouth, featuring David Hulse’s collection.

Since then, David has archived all his research, drawings, books, articles and presentations, and has decided to donate it all to Dartmouth Museum for the benefit of future generations.   David has designed an easy to search index and stored his work on a hard drive. He has made a presentation case for it and will formally make his donation to Dartmouth Museum on Wednesday 7th August at the Guildhall.

This will follow David’s illustrated talk about the inspiration he has found in Thomas Newcomen.  David will talk about his life’s work to bring Newcomen’s and his followers’ engines to life, and make Newcomen’s achievement more widely recognised and understood.  Dartmouth is privileged to have worked with David to create an exhibition, showcase his collection, and now house his research archive that will further enhance our understanding of one of Dartmouth’s greatest sons.

David’s talk will be from 6-7pm at the Clifton Room, in the Guildhall, Victoria Road, after which he will be happy to answer questions and talk about his model making, Newcomen and Dartmouth.  It is free and we hope that as many Dartmouth residents as possible will come to show their appreciation of David’s work and his most generous donations.
