EMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA IN THE 1850s

Dear Historian

Its the start of the new term and we have the 2025-6 programme waiting for you.

Monday 8th September, 7.30pm. The first talk will by Bill Lindsay who, last year, gave a fascinating and informative talk about emigration from Dartmouth to the west coast of Canada. This time his topic is emigration to Australia in the 1850s.

Bill has a strong connection with Dartmouth as his forefather, William Schaw Lindsay stood as MP for the town in 1852. He wasn’t successful but he obviously had a love for the town as he used the port as a base for his shipping line.

His is a story of rags to riches. He met some of the most influential people of his time including Brunel and Dickens. He built up one one of the largest shipping companies in Britain.

Our speaker is the Editor of Topmasts, the on-line magazine for the Society of Nautical Research. He published his forefather’s biography in 2023.

The venue is Kingswear Village Hall

Date / Time: Monday 8th September at 7.30pm.

Entry is £5 at the door (cash please). The entry fee includes payment for tea and biscuits which are served after the presentation
